Agartala, 1st September 2025; In a sudden move that has sparked outrage and concern, 27 sanitation workers at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport were dismissed without prior notice yesterday leaving their families in deep distress just weeks before Durga Puja.
The workers previously employed under a contract with NIH Company were let go following a change in tender. The new contractor Nimbas Company reportedly informed authorities that the current workforce exceeds operational requirements and opted to continue with a reduced staff.
“We were removed without warning or alternatives. Our families are now facing a crisis,” said one of the dismissed workers, who joined others in attempting to speak with airport officials. However, the Airport Authority allegedly refused to engage in dialogue.
Former MLA Dilip Das arrived at the scene upon hearing of the protest and initiated talks with the airport manager. Speaking to the media personnel here, Das stated, “I’ve requested the airport management to retain these workers at least until Durga Puja. I hope a positive resolution will be reached soon.”
This incident has reignited criticism of the central government’s outsourcing policies, which accelerated after the BJP came to power in 2014. While the policy was initially promoted as a cost-effective way to boost employment claiming that one government salary could fund three outsourced positions—critics argue it has primarily benefited large private firms while undermining job security.
The abrupt termination not only threatens the livelihoods of the affected families but also casts a shadow over the local economy, with community members urging swift administrative intervention.
