Agartala, 31st August 2025 : Police in Madhupur have arrested 60-year-old Chandicharan Sarkar in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a six-year-old girl. The arrest was made late last night approximately 48 hours after the incident with assistance from the local intelligence unit. Sarkar was arrested from his in-laws’ residence in the Koyerdhepa area around 10 PM.
Second Officer of Madhupur Police Station Chittaranjan Reang said that the accused will be produced before the subdivision court today under case number 2025 MDP 035. Charges have been filed under Sections 127(2) and 65(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
Sources indicate that in the aftermath of the assault, several ruling party leaders visited the victim’s residence multiple times. Allegations have surfaced suggesting attempts to financially exploit the situation, as the accused’s wife is a government employee. However, police reportedly ignored political pressure and focused on the investigation.
Investigating Officer Uttam Pal had been conducting extensive searches across multiple locations since the case was registered. His efforts culminated in Sarkar’s arrest last night.
Following the incident, officials from the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Police and the Child Protection Commission visited the victim’s home. Authorities and child rights advocates have unanimously demanded strict punishment for the accused.
