Agartala, 1st September 2025;   Tension gripped Gomati District Hospital on Sunday following the death of a woman identified as Rasheda Begum, a resident of Amtali area under Shalgara.

According to reports, Begum was rushed to the hospital where the doctor on duty declared her dead on arrival. While the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed, preliminary suspicion suggests electrocution due to an electrical short circuit. Doctors said the actual reason will be known only after the post-mortem examination scheduled for Monday.

The situation turned chaotic when relatives of the deceased, overcome with grief, forcibly took away the body from the hospital in a goods carrier vehicle, in the presence of police. Eyewitnesses alleged that police personnel from RK Pur station remained silent during the episode, drawing public anger over their role in allowing the body to be taken away without a post-mortem.

Hospital authorities also alleged that some family members of the deceased created a ruckus inside the premises and even damaged the door of the doctor’s chamber. The entire incident was reportedly captured on the hospital’s CCTV cameras.

Later in the evening, officers from RK Pur Police Station and the Women’s Police Station intervened and convinced the family members to return the body to the hospital. Around 8 pm, the body was brought back for the autopsy.

Rasheda Begum was the wife of Sanjan Ali, the elected head (pradhan) of Amtali Gram Panchayat. Authorities confirmed that the body would be handed over to the family after the autopsy is completed on Monday.
