Agartala, 15th September 2024: The state government has sanctioned Rs 12 crore to the Education Department after around 861 schools and educational institutions were damaged due to the recent floods.
Ravel Hemendra Kumar, Special Secretary of the Education Department, stated that Rs 12 crore has been allocated to the School Education Department as part of the state government’s flood relief package.
In a press conference, he mentioned that 861 schools and educational institutions were affected by the floods. Among these, 194 are lower primary schools, 274 are higher primary schools, 332 are senior secondary schools, and 61 are educational offices at various levels, including secondary schools. The total loss amounts to Rs 262.08 crore. He also reported that 3 students lost their lives in the flood.
In addition to infrastructural damage, the flood affected 85,000 books, computers, laptops, mid-day meal supplies, furniture, and equipment in various schools. So far, 21,552 books have been distributed to students whose books were damaged.
He confirmed that no relief camps are currently operating in any schools. Cleaning and disinfection have been completed in 1,341 and 1,347 flood-affected schools, respectively. Classes are continuing as scheduled, with sufficient student attendance.
Regarding the Department of Higher Education, he mentioned that Bakafa Public Library and South Tripura District Public Library were also affected, resulting in the damage of about 8,000 books. Additionally, the boundary wall of Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar College in Belonia, the road of Swami Vivekananda Mahavidyalaya in Mohanpur, and the boundary wall and road of Women’s Polytechnic College in Hapania were damaged, with a total loss of Rs 2.34 crore.
