Against All Odds: ILS Agartala’s NICU Saves Preterm Baby

Agartala, 31st July 2025:   In what is being hailed as a landmark medical breakthrough in Tripura, ILS Hospitals Agartala has successfully saved and discharged one of the most premature babies ever born in the state — a baby girl delivered at just 26 weeks of gestation, weighing only 900 grams at birth.

The baby’s mother, resident of Udaipur, was admitted to ILS Agartala on June 8 with preterm labor pains. Within 24 hours, she gave birth nearly three months ahead of schedule. The newborn, smaller than a standard laptop, faced an uphill battle from the moment she entered the world.

Recognizing the critical nature of her condition, the medical team immediately shifted the baby to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Under the supervision of Dr. Shayan Bhowmik, Consultant Pediatrician and Neonatologist, the hospital mounted an aggressive and meticulous treatment protocol to support the fragile newborn.

Over the course of 55 days, the baby endured a series of life-threatening challenges — from underdeveloped lungs and anemia to severe infections, jaundice, and necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), a dangerous intestinal disease common in premature infants. She was administered surfactant therapy and required respiratory support in the initial days of life.

Despite the daunting odds, the baby showed incredible resilience. With consistent medical attention, expert neonatal support, and round-the-clock monitoring, her condition gradually improved. By the time of her discharge, she had gained weight up to 1,120 grams, was feeding orally, and was breathing independently.

“This is a proud moment not just for our hospital, but for neonatal care in Tripura as a whole,” said Dr. Shayan Bhowmik. “Based on available literature and expert consensus, we believe she is the most premature infant to survive in the state’s medical history.”

The success story has brought attention to ILS Hospitals Agartala’s state-of-the-art NICU infrastructure, advanced medical protocols, and the team’s dedication to saving even the most vulnerable lives. This milestone underscores the growing capability of regional healthcare institutions like ILS Hospitals Agartala in delivering world-class neonatal care — reaffirming their role as a critical pillar in Tripura’s evolving healthcare ecosystem.
