Agartala, 13th March 2026:   With the slogan “Not child marriage, but education should shape the future”, the Tripura government and the Tripura State Commission for Protection of Child Rights have rolled out a special initiative to eradicate child marriage across the state. The campaign aims to reduce the prevalence of child marriage to below five percent by 2029.

As part of the program, specially designed awareness vehicles have been deployed in villages, markets, and public spaces to spread information about the harmful effects of child marriage, relevant laws, and children’s rights. Today, a district-level awareness drive was inaugurated in Udaipur, Gomati district, under the management of the District Social Education Office. The campaign vehicles were flagged off from the Commission’s office premises.

The event was attended by Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson Jayanti Debbarma, CWC Chairman Jhulan Chandra Das, Gomati Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Debal Debroy, members Gautam Kar, Monideepa Debbarma, and Sanjit Rupini, among other dignitaries.

Through this initiative, leaflets and informative materials will be distributed to the public, alongside street plays and other outreach programs. Speaking at the launch, Chairperson Jayanti Debbarma emphasized that the campaign is part of a nationwide effort to build a child marriage-free India. She noted that the drive began on November 27, 2025, and will continue until International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026.

Debbarma reminded the audience that under Indian law, the minimum legal age for marriage is 18 years for women and 21 years for men, and violations are punishable offenses. She urged communities to take an active role in preventing child marriage, stressing that only through collective awareness and participation can a child marriage-free society be achieved.
