Agartala, November 11: Shoppers thronged the jewelry shops in Agartala on Saturday to buy gold, silver and utensils on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras. The festival, which is traditionally celebrated by Hindus as a day to worship Lakshmi and Kubera, the goddess and god of wealth, has become popular among Bengalis as well. It is believed that buying precious metals or utensils on this day brings prosperity, happiness and good fortune to the family.

According to Gopal Chandra Nag, the head of Swarna Kamal Jewellers, located at Kaman Chowmuhani, the heart of Agartala city, there was great enthusiasm among the customers on Dhanteras. “It’s a whole new experience. If you can buy gold at this time, it is believed that the wealth of the family will increase. And many parents are buying wedding jewelry for their sons and daughters,” he said.

Arpita Saha, Director of Shyamsunder Jewellers, said that Dhanteras was full of surprises this year. “We are offering special discounts on making charges, lucky draws and mega draws. Customers are very excited by these offers. They are buying gold jewelry and diamond jewelry especially for their loved ones in the family,” she said.

The jewelers also said that the demand for gold and diamond jewelry had increased this year compared to the previous years, despite the high prices of gold. They attributed this to the festive mood and the positive outlook of the people after the Covid-19 pandemic. They also said that they had taken all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the customers and the staff amid the pandemic. They hoped that the sales would continue to be high till Diwali, the festival of lights.
