Agartala, 23rd August 2026 : Heavy rainfall in the hill areas of Tripura has triggered flooding in several parts of Agartala after the water level of the Haora River rose sharply late Saturday night, affecting more than 1,000 people in low-lying areas.
Several localities under the Sadar and Jirania subdivisions have been affected, with areas along the Haora River and Katakhal Canal among the worst hit. Floodwater has entered homes and inundated residential areas, leaving several families in need of immediate assistance.
The district administration has stepped up rescue and relief efforts, deploying four boats to evacuate people stranded in vulnerable areas. Personnel from the Tripura State Rifles, Tripura Police and various government departments have also been mobilised to assist with rescue operations.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha said several parts of West Tripura district had been inundated and that the situation was being monitored continuously. He directed the concerned District Magistrates and Sub-Divisional Magistrates to take all necessary measures and ensure that affected residents receive relief and assistance without delay.
West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar said the flooding was caused by the sharp rise in the Haora River following heavy rainfall in the hills on Saturday.
According to the DM, Baldakhal, Chandrapur, Srilanka Basti, Aralia and Indranagar are among the affected areas, where floodwater has entered residential premises. Although there was no significant rainfall on Sunday, rescue operations were intensified from the morning to evacuate residents from vulnerable locations.
Six relief camps have been opened, and affected residents are being shifted to safer locations. The Agartala Municipal Corporation, district administration and officials from various line departments are jointly conducting relief and rescue operations.
The District Magistrate said no loss of life had been reported so far and assured that relief materials and other necessary assistance were being provided to affected families.
