Agartala, 23rd April 2025: Mayor Dipak Majumdar presented the budget for the financial year 2025-26 at the Municipal Corporation’s conference hall today announcing an estimated total revenue and capital income of Rs 475.83 crore, with an approved expenditure of ₹476.55 crore, resulting in a projected deficit of Rs 72.02 lakh.
The previous financial year, 2024-25, had an estimated revenue and capital income of Rs 415.97 crore, with an approved expenditure of Rs 416.74 crore and a deficit of Rs 76.75 lakh. The proposed figures for 2025-26 indicate an increase of Rs 59.86 crore in income and Rs 59.81 crore in expenditure compared to the previous year.
Speaking at the budget presentation, Mayor Majumdar emphasized that the increase in expenditure is largely due to new urban development initiatives. “The expansion of infrastructure and community services remains our priority. We aim to ensure efficient public facilities while managing financial constraints,” he stated.
The Corporation plans to address the deficit through internal revenue streams and government grants. The budget has been strengthened by an increase in revenue and non-revenue income, along with financial allocations from the State Government under the 15th Finance Commission and contributions from key schemes such as Smart City Mission, PMAY Urban, SBM, TULM, MYS, and ULM.
A significant portion of the budget covers employee salaries, wages, fuel costs, and operational expenses linked to essential civic services. Additionally, funds have been earmarked for capital expenditures, including several new urban infrastructure projects.
The Corporation’s past performance highlights key infrastructural projects aimed at enhancing the city’s livability. Initiatives have included: Beautification of water bodies across Agartala and its outskirts; Construction of new roads, culverts, drains, parks, public toilets, crematoriums, and municipal markets; and Installation of high-power electric lighting in key areas to enhance public safety.
Municipal officials noted that these developments align with the vision of transforming Agartala into a modern, sustainable urban hub. The newly approved budget underscores the administration’s commitment to urban expansion and improved civic amenities while maintaining fiscal prudence.
