Agartala, 11th October 2026 :The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) and the All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) staged a protest near City Centre in Agartala on Sunday, demanding the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an investigation into the alleged police crackdown on student organisations at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The protest was organised as part of a nationwide day of protest called by the organisations against what they described as police repression of democratic movements.
The protesters alleged that police had launched a brutal attack on demonstrations organised by various student organisations at Jantar Mantar. They further claimed that steps such as the closure of railway services and metro stations, along with the detention of protesting students, were taken to suppress the movement.
Addressing the gathering, AIDSO State President Ramprasad Acharya said students, youth and democratic-minded people from different sections of society had joined the movement demanding the cancellation of SIR and the removal of Gyanesh Kumar from his post.
He strongly condemned the action taken by Delhi Police against the protesters, describing it as an attempt to suppress democratic dissent.
Acharya alleged that the SIR process had raised concerns over the possibility of large numbers of people being deprived of their voting rights. He demanded not only the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner but also legal action against him and exemplary punishment.
He further claimed that student and youth organisation activists participating in protests in several states, including Assam, Bihar and Karnataka, had been arrested.
The Agartala demonstration, he said, was organised to express solidarity with the ongoing nationwide movement and oppose what the organisations termed the suppression of democratic rights.
The protesters called for the immediate cancellation of the SIR process, the removal of Gyanesh Kumar and a proper investigation into the alleged police action against demonstrators in Delhi.
