Agartala, 22nd October 2025: The Tripura State Committee of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) submitted a 10-point memorandum to the Chief Secretary earlier this week, highlighting the pressing concerns of farmers across the state. In response, the Chief Secretary held a meeting with AIKS representatives yesterday to discuss the issues raised.
Speaking to media personnel here, AIKS State Secretary Pabitra Kar and President Aghore Debbarma elaborated on the farmers’ grievances and urged the government to take immediate action. “Farmers in Tripura are facing severe challenges that hinder agricultural productivity. We felt it necessary to bring these matters to the government’s attention,” Kar stated.
Among the key demands raised by the farmers were the extension of border gate operating hours from 6 AM to 5 PM to support agricultural activities, and the provision of unrestricted access to cultivate seasonal crops like paddy and wheat, along with safe transportation of harvested produce. They also emphasized the need for crop protection measures during gate closures. The farmers urged the government to permit the cultivation of a wider range of crops, including vegetables, flowers, fruits, tea, lemons, and other cash crops. Additionally, they demanded full compensation for crop damage caused by high-voltage lights at night, which have reportedly led to pest infestations and crop scorching. Lastly, they called for an increase in the number of border gates and the installation of irrigation systems—particularly solar-powered pumps—for lands situated beyond the fencing.
Kar emphasized that these issues are severely affecting crop yields and pushing farmers into distress. He also urged the government to extend all welfare schemes and employment opportunities including MGNREGA and TUEP to Indian citizens residing beyond the border fencing, along with access to government jobs and financial aid under various schemes.
The AIKS leaders reiterated their call for swift government intervention to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers and ensure equitable access to resources.
