Agartala, 29th July 2026 : Serious allegations have surfaced against the administration over unscientific and poor-quality work to prevent riverbank erosion in Jirania subdivision. Residents and traders of Champaknagar, situated along the Howrah River, have expressed deep resentment against the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO, PWD).
Local families and shop owners claim their homes and businesses are gradually being swallowed by the river. To address the crisis, the government had initiated a project to place boulders along the riverbank. However, residents allege that the work was executed in a completely unscientific manner with substandard materials. Despite repeated complaints, the SDM and SDO reportedly ignored the grievances.
Affected families further allege that they have not received even minimal government assistance to date. Locals suspect the involvement of vested interests behind the poor-quality work and demand immediate government intervention. Speaking to the media, they urged authorities to fulfill promises made to the public and ensure proper, scientific measures to stop riverbank erosion.
