Alleged inflated electricity bills trigger road blockade at Sonamura

Date:

Agartala, 3rd August 2026:  Alleging harassment over inflated electricity bills and the failure of the authorities to resolve long-pending grievances, electricity consumers in Sonamura staged a demonstration and briefly blocked a road on Monday, disrupting traffic in the area.

According to local sources, residents have been facing various irregularities in their electricity bills for a considerable period. Consumers alleged that despite repeated complaints, the Electricity Department failed to provide a permanent solution, leaving them frustrated over what they described as excessive billing and official apathy.

A large number of consumers gathered at the Sonamura Electricity Division office on Monday morning to submit their complaints and seek immediate redressal. However, after noon, the officer in charge was reportedly absent from the office, further aggravating the situation. Angry consumers accused the department of negligence and staged a protest in front of the office.

As the agitation intensified, the protesters moved onto the main road in front of the electricity office and staged a road blockade, disrupting vehicular movement and causing a traffic jam in the area.

On receiving information, police personnel and officials from the local administration rushed to the spot. They held discussions with the agitating consumers and assured them that their grievances would be addressed. Following the administration’s intervention, the protesters withdrew the road blockade, restoring normal traffic movement.

The agitating consumers warned that if the Electricity Department fails to take immediate steps to rectify the alleged inflated bills and resolve their pending issues, they would launch a larger agitation in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Electricity Department’s response to the allegations was not immediately available.
