Ambassa Municipal Council: New Chairman sworn in amidst controversy

Date:

By TC News Desk

Agartala, 30th October 2024:   The chair of Ambassa Municipal Council had been vacant for a long time since the previous chairman took a government job. Today, all elected councilors of Ambassa Municipal Council came together and proposed the name of the new chairman. Accordingly, Pratima Malakar was appointed and sworn in as the new chairman through the official process of the CEO of the council.

However, controversy arose when newly elected Chairman Pratima Malakar announced the name of Uttam Adhikari as the new vice-chairman, despite the current Vice-Chairman Gopal Sutradhar still holding the position. This led to conflict between the party and some councilors.

“The chairman post was supposed to be filled on party orders. Today, the chairman took the oath, but I was still in the vice chairman’s chair. How did the newly appointed chairman announce the name of the vice-chairman immediately without paying attention to the party instructions?” questioned Gopal Sutradhar. He also mentioned that they disobeyed the Chief Minister’s order and expressed hope that the state-level leadership and the Chief Minister would take the right decision on this issue.

BJP Dhalai district committee president Patiram Tripura commented on the situation, saying, “There is no party directive. Ambassa was directed by the party to fill the vacant post of chairman of the Municipal Council. Pratima Malakar was sworn in today for the vacant post of chairman. But after she took the oath, she announced the name of the new vice-chairman without any instructions from the party. When I came to know that the new chairman announced the name of the vice-chairman again, I immediately raised the matter to the state leadership. In the coming days, the state leaders will take the right decision on this matter.”

The conflict over the appointment has become a topic of discussion in the entire council area, and it remains to be seen how the issue will be resolved.
