Agartala, 25th August 2025:   In a bid to tackle growing traffic congestion in the city ahead of Durga Puja, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Traffic Department on Monday launched a special drive covering the stretch from Kaman Chowmuhani to Post Chowmuhani.

Traffic snarls have become a daily ordeal in several busy parts of the capital. A senior AMC official said the initiative has been taken to ensure smooth movement of people during the festive season and to maintain the city’s order and aesthetics.

Authorities highlighted that indiscriminate parking of cars, bikes, and scooters on roadsides, intersections, and narrow lanes is a major cause of congestion. Strict action has been initiated against such violations, with several vehicles being removed and fines imposed on offenders.

The drive also targeted footpath encroachments by temporary food stalls. Plastic bags were confiscated from vendors despite an existing ban on their use. “We have been issuing warnings for a long time, but violations continue. This drive is aimed at easing congestion, preventing accidents, and ensuring public safety,” the official said.

He further noted that with huge crowds expected during Durga Puja, the authorities are taking proactive steps to keep Agartala clean and traffic-free, so that emergency services can function without disruption.
