AMC undertakes multiple steps to make city flood free

Agartala: June 19. Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has implemented a series of initiatives to ensure the city remains flood-free during heavy rains. With the aim of efficiently draining accumulated water, the corporation has deployed several resources and teams dedicated to flood and disaster management.

Agartala Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta said at present Agartala Municipal Corporation have 16 pump machines to drain heavy rain water in Agartala. 5 of these are diesel powered pump machines. 11 machines are electric. Besides, there are 5 motorized boats, 15 life jackets, 2 sky lifts for felling trees and 4 dedicated teams in Central, North, South and East zones for flood and disaster management.

Deputy Mayor said that during the heavy rain yesterday, besides herself, Additional Municipal Commissioner Sajjad P, Executive Engineer of Water Resources Department Joydeb Chakraborty, Executive Engineer of Agartala Municipal Corporation Division One Sujoy Chowdhury and other officials inspected various pump machines and drainage system of water extraction.

Last night at 12 o’clock during the rain, Mayor Deepak Majumder of AMC and other officials visited different areas of the capital.

He said that the Akhaura canal and Kalapaniya canal have already been cleaned using modern machines.

“There are 21 medium drains in Agartala Municipal Corporation area. These are kept clean through outsourcing agencies. Apart from this, 22 small drains are kept clean by the cleaning staff of AMC”, he said.

Sadar Sub-Divisional Governor Arup Deb said today that the Sadar Sub-Divisional Administration has 5 boats to deal with floods. 10 civil defense volunteers have been kept on standby. Besides, there are 10 Apda Mitras in the district administration.

He said that during the rains yesterday, Corporator Alak Bhattacharya of AMC, Hiralal Debnath, DCMs of Sadar sub-division administration, Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kishore Sarkar, Civil Defense volunteers visited various areas of wards.
