Anganwadi workers stage protest in Agartala over unfulfilled demands

Date:

Agartala, 22nd April 2026:  Anganwadi workers and helpers today staged a protest outside the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education at Ujan Abhoynagar in the capital, alleging prolonged deprivation of their rightful entitlements due to the state government’s failure to implement a High Court directive.

The agitating workers assembled at the department premises and raised slogans while placing a nine-point charter of demands before the authorities. Their key demands included implementation of gratuity benefits as per the court’s order, regularization of services, introduction of a pension scheme, and provision of Dearness Allowance (DA).

Addressing the media personnel, the protesters expressed strong dissatisfaction, stating that despite delivering essential services, they continue to receive wages significantly lower than those of MGNREGA workers. They termed the disparity “unjust” and called for immediate corrective measures.

The workers informed that they had earlier moved the High Court seeking their legitimate dues. The court ruled in their favor, directing that gratuity be granted. However, even after the state government appealed before a Division Bench of the Tripura High Court, the verdict was upheld in favor of the Anganwadi workers and helpers.

Despite these rulings, they alleged that the government has yet to implement the order. They further pointed out that since 2017, they have not been receiving Dearness Allowance on par with other government employees. Prior to 2017, periodic financial enhancements similar to DA were provided, but those have since been discontinued.

The protesters also criticized the present government, stating that no substantial steps have been taken to improve their financial conditions. Following the demonstration, the Anganwadi workers and helpers submitted a memorandum to the Director of the department, urging immediate action on their long-pending demands.
