Agartala, 4th March 2024:  In a shocking incident that unfolded yesteday night, one Rajib Saha and his wife allegedly assaulted Asha worker Lakshmi Debnath Pal in the Master Para area of the capital. The incident occurred following a confrontation regarding the administration of polio drops to children in the locality.

Lakshmi Debnath Pal, appointed as an Asha worker on February 5, had undertaken a survey in the Master Para area. Upon discovering that one child in Rajib Saha’s household had not received polio drops, Pal promptly advised them to visit the sub-center for vaccination. The child was subsequently vaccinated as recommended.

However, tensions escalated when two tenant families from Rajib Saha’s house approached Pal, expressing concerns about their nine-year-old children missing polio drops for three months. Pal directed them to the Jaghari Mura sub-center for immediate vaccination.

The situation took a violent turn on Sunday night when, after the children of the tenants received the polio drops, Rajib Saha allegedly accosted Pal on the road. Using obscene language, he demanded that their house be excluded from future vaccination activities.

Later that night, around 9:30 PM, Rajib Saha and his wife reportedly visited Pal’s residence and subjected her and her daughter to verbal abuse before physically assaulting them. West Agartala police were informed, and an inspection of the scene was conducted, but no arrests were made as of Monday morning.

In response to the lack of immediate action, ASHA activists gathered at the West Agartala police station on Monday, demanding the swift arrest and severe punishment of Rajib Saha and his wife. The activists called for justice for the assaulted Asha worker and her daughter.

While reports suggest that the accused, Rajib, and a close relative are attempting to politicize the matter for their defense, Asha worker Lakshmi Debnath Pal remained steadfast in her demand for a fair trial. The situation is ongoing, and the community awaits a prompt resolution from the authorities.
