Home department collects over Rs 31 Crore in fines for helmet and vehicle document violations: CM Dr Manik Saha

Agartala, 4th March 2024:   In the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha, who also heads the Home Department on Monday disclosed that fines amounting to Rs 31 crore 27 lakh 41 thousand 440 have been collected from individuals violating helmet and vehicle document regulations. The fines were imposed on 4 lakh 11 thousand 550 individuals across the financial years 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24 until January.

During the assembly session, CPIM MLA Nirmal Biswas raised a query regarding the fines. Dr. Saha provided a breakdown of the fines, stating that a total of 4,11,550 individuals were fined for riding motorcycles and scooters without helmets and necessary vehicle documents during the mentioned financial years.

In the fiscal year 2021-22, 38,891 individuals were fined for not wearing helmets, while 78,483 were fined for driving without valid vehicle documents. In the subsequent fiscal year, the number of fines increased, with 45,272 individuals penalized for helmet violations and 98,495 fined for invalid vehicle documents. The trend continued in the ongoing fiscal year, with 57,515 fines issued for helmet violations and 90,894 for invalid vehicle documents until January.

Regarding the collected fines, Dr. Saha specified that a total of Rs 31,27,41,440 had been recovered during the stated financial years. In the fiscal year 2021-22, Rs 9,01,66,910 was collected as fines for helmet and vehicle document violations. Similarly, in the fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24 (until January), Rs 11,23,36,700 and Rs 11,02,37,830 were collected, respectively.
