Asish Kumar Saha seeks clarity on electricity tariff subsidy

Date:

Agartala, 22nd  August 2026 : Tripura Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha has raised questions over the state government’s recent decision to provide a ₹100 crore subsidy following the hike in electricity tariffs, alleging that the government has changed its position on the issue.

Saha said the government had earlier maintained that electricity tariff revisions were solely under the authority of the Regulatory Commission and that the Power Department had no role in determining the charges. He alleged that the same argument was repeatedly used to avoid accountability over the tariff hike.

He said the increased electricity charges have generated widespread public anger and turned into a major public issue, while the Congress has been seeking answers from the government for months.

Questioning the timing of the subsidy announcement, Saha asked why financial relief was being offered after consumers had already paid higher tariffs. He also questioned the justification for organising programmes to thank the government over the subsidy.

The Congress leader sought details on the total amount required to offset the tariff burden, the beneficiaries who would qualify for the subsidy and the procedure through which the assistance would reach consumers.

Saha said the Congress would wait for clarity on the implementation process and assess the actual benefit reaching ordinary consumers before deciding its next course of action on the electricity tariff issue.
