Assam police seized cannabis worth Rs 1 crore; Tripura driver arrested

Agartala, February 18, 2023: Assam police on Saturday afternoon seized one tonne of cannabis worth more than Rs 1 crore has been seized from a truck from Churaibari Watch Post area. The truck driver was also arrested.

Like usual days, Churaibari Watch Post staff led by its in-charge Niranjan Das have been checking vehicles. In a 6-wheeler truck, one tonne of cannabis in 50 packets were recovered.

Watch Post’s Police in-charge Niranjan Das said that the estimated market value would be around Rs 1 crore. The truck driver Biplab Das (24), a resident of Sukantanagar area under Kumarghat police station was also arrested. The seized cannabis along with the truck and the arrested driver are in the custody of the police.

In the preliminary interrogation, the arrested driver candidly admitted that he collected the cannabis from Jirania and had to reach Byrnihat in Meghalaya. Later, they were supposed to be smuggled to Bihar.

A case has been registered under the sections of NDPS Act. The police informed that the accused will be produced before the CJM court in to Karimganj district on Sunday.
