Auto drivers protest during traffic drive over black window films in Tripura

Date:

Agartala, 2nd August 2026:  Tension briefly prevailed in the Lembutuli area under Kamalasagar on Sunday after an enforcement drive against the use of prohibited black window films on vehicles triggered a protest by auto-rickshaw drivers.

According to local sources, police from Bishalgarh Police Station conducted a traffic enforcement drive in Lembutuli targeting vehicles using banned black window films. During the operation, several auto-rickshaws were stopped and fined under the applicable traffic laws for violating the regulations.

The action prompted protests from a section of auto-rickshaw drivers, who alleged that the law was being enforced selectively. They argued that authorities should not target only auto-rickshaws but should apply the same rules uniformly to all categories of vehicles.

The protesting drivers claimed that many larger vehicles, including some allegedly belonging to government departments and the police, also use black window films. They questioned why similar action was not being taken against those vehicles and demanded equal enforcement of the law.

The auto drivers maintained that there should be no discrimination in the implementation of traffic regulations, stating that uniform enforcement would strengthen public confidence in the legal system.

The protest led to a brief period of tension in the area. However, the situation was later brought under control, and normalcy was restored. No reports of injuries or major untoward incidents were received.
