Agartala, 21st February 2026:   Severe political tension gripped the Baijalbari area under the Ramchandra Ghat assembly constituency in Khowai this afternoon following a rally organized by the BJP Janajati Morcha. The situation escalated after alleged protests by workers and supporters of the Tipra Motha Party, who reportedly attempted to block the Janajati Morcha’s programme.

Local sources informed that Tipra Motha supporters took out a protest procession in front of the office of local MLA Ranjit Debbarma, aiming to foil the scheduled rally. Tension intensified when Minister Bikash Debbarma arrived in the Baijalbari area, prompting slogan-chanting by protesters and creating a charged atmosphere.

Upon receiving information about the unrest, police personnel along with jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force rushed to the spot and intervened to prevent any major clash. Although large-scale violence was averted due to swift security deployment, traffic on National Highway No. 208 came to a standstill for a considerable period. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the highway, causing immense inconvenience to commuters and local residents.

Later, Minister Debbarma held a separate meeting at Padmabil and staged a protest, following which the BJP Janajati Morcha rally was virtually stalled. Speaking to the media after the incident, the minister asserted that such protests in ADC areas would not be able to stop the BJP. He also made serious allegations against MLA Ranjit Debbarma, claiming his past involvement in militant activities and warned that legal action would be initiated. However, no immediate response was received from Ranjit Debbarma or the Tipra Motha leadership regarding these allegations.

Meanwhile, the administration stated that the situation in the Khowai’s Ramchandra Ghat area is being closely monitored. Adequate security arrangements, including deployment of paramilitary forces, have been made to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation.
