Baikhora police seize 17 cattle destined for smuggling into Bangladesh

Date:

Agartala, 31st July 2026:  Acting on a late-night tip-off, Baikhora Police seized 17 cattle allegedly being transported for smuggling into Bangladesh. The raid, led by Second Officer Birajit Das, intercepted two Bolero vehicles bearing registration numbers TR 03 E 1600 and TR 08 A 1612 carrying the livestock.

Sources allege that the operation was masterminded by Sapan Datta of Laulang, who has long been accused of running a cattle smuggling network through Baikhora and Poangbari routes. Datta reportedly employed two associates, Tapan Tripura and Tapu, to deliver cattle to Bangladeshi butchers Minar Mia and Biltu Mia.

Residents claim that during the tenure of former Officer-in-Charge Bishnu Chandra Das, smugglers operated freely, allegedly paying monthly bribes to facilitate the trade. However, since Das’ transfer, police have tightened enforcement.

Following Thursday’s seizure, reports suggest Datta attempted to bribe police officials to manage the fallout. A case has been registered, and authorities are working to identify the cattle’s rightful owner.

Second Officer Birajit Das told the media that investigations are underway to expose the full network. Locals are now watching closely to see if this crackdown leads to lasting action against the smugglers.
