Agartala, 20th February 2024:  A teacher of Holy Cross School in Durjoynagar, Agartala, allegedly asked a Class VIII student to remove his ‘Omkar’ bracelet, a religious symbol of Hinduism, on Monday. The student, Somnath, informed his father about the incident, who then complained to the school principal over the phone.

The family demanded that the teacher return the bracelet to Somnath, and also sought an apology from the school authorities. The incident sparked a protest by the Bajrang Dal, a Hindu nationalist group, in front of the school on Tuesday.

The school authorities issued a statement on Tuesday, expressing regret and calling the incident “very unfortunate”. They assured the parent that action would be taken as soon as possible, and said that the vice principal had met the father and agreed to his demand. The teacher also returned the bracelet to Somnath.

The statement further said that the school authorities did not condone such behavior from any of their staff, and that they always respected all religious sentiments while maintaining the secular atmosphere of their school. They urged those whose feelings were hurt to consider this an isolated incident.
