Agartala, 11th August 2025: A school teacher in Belonia has reportedly fallen victim to a major cyber fraud resulting in the unauthorized withdrawal of Rs 56,176 from her bank account in two separate transactions.
According to the incident report, Deepti Malla, a teacher at BKI Institution in Belonia was appointed as the Booth Level Officer (BLO) for booth number 21 of the Belonia assembly constituency on August 05. However, her BLO credentials had not yet been linked to her mobile device.
On August 10, Malla received a phone call from an unknown number instructing her to download a mobile application and submit specific personal details, including her name and booth code “35/21.” She was then asked to upload a document written in capital letters through the app. Trusting the caller, she complied.
Shortly after submitting the information, Malla received a mobile notification alerting her to two large withdrawals from her bank account. Shocked, she immediately contacted her bank, the local cyber crime unit and Belonia police station to report the incident. A formal case has since been registered.
Speaking to the media personnel, Malla urged authorities to take proactive measures to prevent similar incidents. “Instead of seeking personal justice, I want the police and cyber crime department to ensure that no one else falls prey to such deceit,” she said.
The case has raised concerns over digital security protocols for government-appointed officers and the growing threat of cyber scams targeting unsuspecting individuals. Investigations are currently underway.
