Intas Foundation’s Apna Ghar: A Home of Care During Cancer Treatment

Date:

Intas Foundation, Agartala Transit Home
For Mrs. Arati Das Debnath, a 70-year-old homemaker undergoing treatment for supraglottic cancer, access to consistent care was as important as the treatment itself. Receiving medical attention at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre in Agartala meant frequent hospital visits and extended stays away from home, an immense challenge for an elderly patient with declining health.

This is where Apna Ghar (Agartala Transit Home) became a life-changing support system for her and her family.

Coming from Santi Bazar, Mrs. Debnath’s grandson and caregiver, Milan Debnath, learned about Apna Ghar through the hospital and chose to stay there from the month of May. What began as a temporary arrangement soon turned into a dependable refuge during months of ongoing treatment.

Apna Ghar provided more than just accommodation. The clean and hygienic living environment ensured safety and comfort for an immunocompromised patient, while regular meals helped maintain her strength during treatment. Most importantly, the availability of dedicated transport services ensured that Mrs. Debnath never missed her hospital appointments, eliminating the daily stress of arranging travel.

For an elderly patient battling cancer, this stability had a profound impact. The assurance of a safe place to stay, timely meals, and seamless hospital access allowed Mrs. Debnath to focus on healing rather than hardship. It also eased the emotional and physical burden on her caregiver, enabling him to provide better support.

Reflecting on their experience, Mr. Milan describes Apna Ghar as a true blessing, a place that consistently felt like home during one of the most difficult phases of their lives.

Mrs. Arati Das Debnath’s story highlights the vital role Apna Ghar plays in the cancer care ecosystem. By addressing the non-medical needs of patients, shelter, food, transport, and dignity, Apna Ghar transforms treatment journeys, offering comfort, continuity, and hope when it is needed most.
