Agartala, 30th May 2025: The District and Sessions Judge Court of Belonia, South District, on Friday convicted a man and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a girl.
According to a press release from Tripura Police, on September 14, 2024, the accused, Prasenjit Muhuri, wrongfully restrained a girl near Kali Bari, Dharmanagar, under Belonia Police Station jurisdiction. The victim was returning home from Dharmanagar Senior Basic School when Muhuri allegedly kidnapped her, taking her to a rubber garden by vehicle, where he forcibly committed rape.
Later that night, the accused reportedly left the victim near the residence of one Gouranga Dutta and fled the scene.
“Today, the Learned Special Judge, Belonia, South District, convicted Prasenjit Muhuri (22) and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 10,000. In case of non-payment of the fine, he will undergo simple imprisonment for two months for offenses punishable under Section 6 of the POCSO Act,” the press release stated.
Additionally, the convict was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 2,000. In default of payment, he will serve one month of simple imprisonment.
The case was thoroughly investigated by Women Inspector Swapna Bhowmik of Belonia Women Police Station, who submitted the charge sheet that led to this conviction.
