Agartala, 27th   November 2025:  Agartala may not yet be gripped by the chill of winter, but the city is already embracing the season’s spirit thanks to the arrival of Bhutanese traders and their winter wear stalls. As in previous years, families from Bhutan began setting up shops in the Battala area from November 1, transforming the locality into a seasonal marketplace.

For more than four decades, Bhutanese families have traveled to Agartala each winter to sell woolen garments. In the early years, their stalls were located opposite the Durga Bari temple, but over time Battala became their permanent hub. Today, between eight and ten families make the journey annually, continuing this long-standing tradition.

Their shops are best known for Himalayan woolens—sweaters, jackets, shawls, and other garments. Alongside handmade items, they also bring modern, stylish winter wear from Bhutan, catering to diverse customer preferences.

Although the winter chill has yet to fully set in, crowds have already begun flocking to the stalls. Demand for Bhutanese woolens in Agartala remains strong year after year, ensuring that these traders return “like migratory birds” whenever the season arrives.
