Agartala, 22nd September 2024: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura on Sunday launched a sharp attack against the opposition Congress, accusing them of spreading misinformation regarding the state’s flood relief efforts.
BJP Tripura Pradesh spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty, addressing a press conference, slammed Tripura Congress President Asish Kumar Saha for making what he described as “fabricated and baseless” claims, asserting that the Congress party has lost public support in the state.
Chakraborty questioned the Congress’s contribution during the flood crisis, asking, “How many Congress workers have visited the flood-affected areas or stood by the victims? In times of crisis, the focus should be on supporting the government’s efforts, not confusing the public.” He emphasized that BJP leaders, ministers, and MLAs were on the ground, actively involved in relief efforts.
He further stated that the state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, had announced financial assistance for the families of flood victims. “The Chief Minister has sanctioned Rs 4 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 for the injured. So far, 36 people have died, and 33 families have already received their compensation. By the end of this week, all affected families will receive the promised aid,” he said.
Chakraborty highlighted the extensive damage caused by the floods, which lasted five days, with over 3,000 people still sheltering in 67 relief camps. He pointed out the destruction of houses, loss of livestock, and damage to personal belongings, as well as the impact on farmers and fish farmers, who have already received Rs 1,000 in preliminary assistance.
Refuting Congress’s allegations that the state government has been selective in providing aid, Chakraborty said, “The government has ensured that all affected individuals, regardless of their political affiliations, receive support. Congress’s claim that we are not taking adequate steps is completely false. Relief efforts are ongoing, and we are committed to rebuilding lives and supporting those affected by the floods.”
He also noted that a central government team had visited the state for a preliminary assessment of the damage, and BJP workers continue to assist flood victims.
Accusing Congress of attempting to defame the state government, Chakraborty said, “Congress’s claim that aid is being distributed based on political lines is nothing but dirty politics. They seem to have forgotten their own track record when they were in power. We strongly condemn their attempt to mislead the people and undermine the government’s efforts.”
