Agartala, 10th September 2026 : Peace and stability in Tripura will remain the top priority as the state moves towards the upcoming Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Power Minister and senior BJP leader Ratan Lal Nath said on Thursday.
Speaking after a coordination meeting between the BJP and its alliance partner Tipra Motha Party in Agartala, Nath said the two parties had worked out a seat-sharing formula based on the results of the previous ADC elections.
“Due to shortage of time, we could not reach the grassroots organisationally. However, everyone understands what we want. Most importantly, we want peace, and that is our top priority,” Nath said.
He said peace and stability were essential for accelerating development in the state. “Whatever development has already taken place can be taken forward at a much faster pace if peace is maintained,” he added.
The BJP and Tipra Motha held the meeting to coordinate their electoral strategy for the Village Committee polls, particularly to prevent vote division between alliance partners. Discussions focused on seat-sharing, candidate coordination and withdrawal of nominations filed by additional candidates in seats where alliance candidates have already been finalised.
The meeting was attended by Nath, Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, BJP GS Bipin Debbarma from the BJP, while Tipra Motha was represented by party leader Ranjit Debbarma and TTAADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Runiel Debbarma, MLA Paul Dangsu, Biswajit Kalai and Philip Kumar Reang
Nath, responding to questions over separate candidates being fielded by the two alliance partners in some constituencies, said electoral strategies varied from one election to another.
“Every election has its own strategy. Political strategy is not necessarily the same in every election,” he said, adding that the BJP would not disclose its electoral strategy to opposition parties in advance.
Nath also criticised the CPI(M) and Congress over their performance in filing nominations. He claimed the opposition parties lacked sufficient organisational strength and public support in the tribal areas.
“If independents can file nominations, why could the CPI(M) and Congress not do so? The fact is that they have no significant support in the tribal areas,” Nath said.
The leaders also discussed the withdrawal of nominations filed by extra candidates and coordination of campaign programmes to ensure the victory of alliance nominees.
