Agartala, 10th September 2026 : Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Thursday claimed that the BJP and Tipra Motha were facing growing resistance at the grassroots level in the ADC areas of Sabroom, despite what he described as attempts to prevent opposition candidates from entering the electoral fray.
During his visit to Rupaichhari ADC Village, Chaudhury said he interacted with CPI(M) candidates, supporters and local residents across villages under the Rupaichhari block. He said the response from the public had been “spontaneous” and that party candidates, including women and young people, were actively preparing for the campaign.
Chaudhury said the scrutiny of nomination papers had concluded on Wednesday, with nearly 99 per cent of nominations having valid documents being accepted. Thursday was the final day for candidates to withdraw their nominations.
According to Chaudhury, the BJP and Tipra Motha were now facing difficulties at the grassroots despite their reported understanding over seat-sharing. He claimed that in several wards, including those under Rupaichhari block, candidates from both parties were contesting against each other.
He also alleged that opposition candidates were being threatened and pressured to withdraw from the race. “Our candidates are mentally fully prepared to face any situation,” Chaudhury said, adding that he had raised the matter with the administration and had received assurances that intimidation would not be permitted.
Calling for a free and democratic village election, Chaudhury said the people had witnessed the functioning of both parties over the past several years. “These tactics will not work; democracy will triumph,” he asserted.
