Women lock JJM pump house over three-month drinking water crisis

Date:

Agartala, 10th September 2026 :  Agitated over an acute drinking water crisis, a group of women from Ward No. 4 of Rajnagar Gram Panchayat under Jubarajnagar Block on Thursday locked the Jal Jeevan Mission pump house located in Ward No. 6, demanding an immediate and permanent solution.

According to local residents, people in Ward No. 4 have been deprived of drinking water from the pump for nearly three months after a main connection line developed a major fault. Despite repeated written and verbal complaints to the concerned authorities, the problem has reportedly remained unresolved.

The protesting women alleged that substandard pipes were used during the execution of the project, resulting in frequent leakages and bursts. They claimed that even after one portion of the pipeline is repaired, another section develops a fault, causing water wastage and disrupting supply.

After locking the pump house, the women spoke with pump operator Debashish Debnath, who reportedly assured them that the matter would be brought to the attention of higher authorities and that necessary repairs would be undertaken at the earliest.

However, the women have retained the key to the pump house, warning that they will launch a larger agitation if the drinking water crisis is not permanently resolved soon.
