Agartala, 4th May 2026: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a decisive victory in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election in Tripura, with candidate Jahar Chakraborty winning by a significant margin of 24,291 votes.
The by-election for the Dharmanagar constituency in North Tripura was held on April 9, following the demise of sitting BJP MLA and then Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen. Counting of votes began at 8 AM today under tight security arrangements.
According to the final results, Chakraborty defeated his nearest rivals comfortably, strengthening the BJP’s position in the region. The CPI(M) candidate Amitabh Datta secured 6,001 votes, while Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee received 5,936 votes.
Speaking after his win, Chakraborty said the result reflected continued public support for the BJP in Dharmanagar. He noted that the party had earlier won the constituency in both the 2018 and 2023 Assembly elections and thanked voters for their trust. He also emphasized the party’s focus on development, stating that efforts would be made to further modernize Dharmanagar, the second-largest city in Tripura.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha congratulated the winning candidate and expressed gratitude to the people of Dharmanagar. He said the strong mandate reflects public confidence and added that the government remains committed to the development, peace, and progress of the region.
The result marks a comfortable win for the BJP, reinforcing its influence in North Tripura’s political landscape.
