Agartala, 18th January 2025: In a significant operation along the India-Bangladesh border, the Border Security Force (BSF) thwarted a major smuggling attempt, seizing a large quantity of narcotics and contraband. During the operation, a woman and a child were injured as BSF personnel deployed non-lethal weapons to counter an aggressive group of smugglers.
The incident took place when BSF personnel, stationed in the crime-prone Boxanagar area of the Sepahijala district, spotted a group of individuals, including women and children, attempting to smuggle items across the border. The BSF stated that some members of the group were armed with sharp weapons and became hostile when confronted.
“Exercising utmost restraint, our personnel fired one round from a pump action gun (PAG) in self-defense to prevent harm to themselves and safeguard government property,” read a statement from the BSF Tripura Frontier.
The injured individuals, identified as part of the smuggling group, received immediate medical attention. Meanwhile, the BSF seized a substantial haul, including Eskuf syrup and several sacks of sugar and rice, further highlighting the rampant illegal activities in the region.
Boxanagar, notorious for drug and cattle smuggling, as well as the illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas, remains a challenging area for security forces. “Despite the adversities, our jawans are committed to curbing illegal activities and maintaining the sanctity of the international border with utmost professionalism and minimal use of force,” the BSF added.
The operation highlights the BSF’s ongoing efforts to secure the border and combat organized smuggling, a persistent issue that involves a significant number of local youth in the region.
