Cannabis plantations remain untouched in Sutarmura ONGC area; Locals question police action

Agartala, 3rd January 2026:   Despite ongoing large-scale anti-cannabis operations across Sepahijala district, vast stretches of illegal cannabis plantations in the Sutar Mura ONGC hill area under Bishramganj police station remain untouched.

Over the past month, joint forces have destroyed hundreds of thousands of cannabis plants in different police station jurisdictions across the district. The crackdown has been widely praised as a strong step against illegal cultivation. However, in stark contrast, several lakh cannabis plants in Sutar Mura continue to thrive, with no police raids conducted so far.

Local cultivators, emboldened by the absence of enforcement, are reportedly nurturing the crop with fertilizers, pesticides, and regular irrigation, hoping for a bumper harvest this season. Sources suggest that sections of the local tribal population, along with cultivators from Boxanagar, are involved in the illegal plantations. They are allegedly eyeing profits worth lakhs of rupees from the sale of dried cannabis, dreaming of overnight wealth.

Community members have raised concerns, questioning why police have not yet moved against these plantations despite being aware of their existence. With the cannabis plants already beginning to yield, cultivators are eagerly awaiting the harvest season.

Residents fear that if the police fail to act, the untouched plantations will provide cultivators with a free pass to profit from illegal trade. The pressing question remains: will the authorities intervene to destroy the cannabis fields this year, or will inaction allow cultivators to reap the benefits unchecked?
