Agartala, 6th May 2025:  Grief has engulfed Charilam following the untimely demise of Class VII student Sumit Saha, who succumbed to a severe esophageal disease late last night. The 12-year-old, a student of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vidyajyoti School passed away at Silchar Cancer Care Hospital after battling the illness for months.

Sumit’s father Biswajit Saha, a bamboo and rattan seller recalled the difficult days leading up to his son’s passing. “He couldn’t eat, he struggled for months. We took him to multiple doctors, but nothing worked,” he said.

His body was transported from Silchar to his home near Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Mini Stadium early this morning. The locality gathered in mourning. His elder sister Tanushree Saha, a student of NIT Agartala broke down as she ran behind the funeral procession, crying out her brother’s name in despair. “Brother, brother, brother!” she screamed.

The sorrow was palpable among family members and neighbors. His mother Jayashree Saha fainted multiple times, unable to bear the grief while relatives and locals expressed their disbelief over the tragedy. “Why did God take him at such a young age?” one neighbour lamented.

Sumit had reportedly struggled to eat in recent months and frequently questioned his mother about his condition. “Mother, God can eat three times a day, but why can’t I eat even one meal?” he had asked her, a plea that now echoes in the grief-stricken household.

His funeral rites were conducted along the banks of the Ranga Pania river this afternoon in accordance with Hindu customs. As his elder sister continued to weep inconsolably, a family friend described her anguish. “She loved her brother more than anything. He was her world,” they said.
