Agartala , 18th December 2025:  Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, founder of the Tipra Motha Party, on Thursday underlined that choosing a script for a language is a fundamental right under the Constitution, and no external authority can dictate which script the tribal communities of Tripura should adopt.

Addressing a Homchang Rally (Torch Rally) in Santirbazar, South Tripura, Pradyot demanded the adoption of the Roman script for Kokborok, asserting that the decision must rest entirely with the Tiprasa people.

“Tiprasa have the right to select their own script. No one can decide for us. This is our constitutional right. People from outside, especially non-tribals, cannot impose scripts for examinations or official use. That is why we are protesting across the state. Language is more than politics; it is about our identity, culture, history, and future. We want the freedom to use our script, and this choice belongs to us alone,” Pradyot said.

The royal scion further emphasized that no one can label a script as “good” or “bad,” reiterating that the Homchang Rally is being held across Tripura solely to advocate for the Roman script.

He also criticized the BJP, claiming that although the party has substantial financial resources, some of its tribal leaders are sowing confusion by asserting they can secure victory in the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections.

“Even the BJP’s tribal wing lacks genuine support in tribal regions. Their influence is like ‘elephant teeth’—visible but ineffective. The sentiments of the tribals are with Tipra Motha. Issues related to language and identity should not be politicized. Just as no one would accept if Bengali were suggested to be written in the Urdu script, similarly, outsiders should not dictate the script for Kokborok. My fight is for the rights of our people, not for money or political gain,” Pradyot concluded.
