Citizen catches suspected thief near former CM Samir Ranjan Barman’s residence

Agartala, 2nd October 2026 : A suspected thief was apprehended by local residents and handed over to police following a series of thefts in the vicinity of former Chief Minister Samir Ranjan Barman’s residence under West Agartala police station.

According to residents, several houses in the area have reportedly been targeted over the past few days, with AC wiring, copper cables, electrical lines and other materials stolen. Residents claimed that complaints had earlier been lodged with the police.

The latest incident came to light after a local resident monitoring CCTV footage noticed a man allegedly stealing iron rods and AC components from a neighbouring house. The resident, with the help of others, caught the suspect and subsequently handed him over to the police.

The resident alleged that the suspect admitted to having knowledge of other thefts in Agartala and mentioned the names of several persons, including one identified as Rahul and another reportedly from Radhanagar. The resident also claimed that the suspect appeared to have needle marks on his hands.

Police are investigating the allegations and the suspected involvement of others in the thefts. Residents have urged the authorities to step up patrolling and take action against the alleged theft network operating in the area.
