Agartala, 28th February 2025: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) took to the streets on Friday protesting against the illegal occupation of tea and rubber plantation lands among other demands. The protest march began at Melarmath and traversed various streets of the city.
Following the march, a delegation from the organization submitted a deputation to the Commissioner of the Labour Department. Narayan Kar, former MP and convener of the Left Front, addressed the gathering, stating, “Under the BJP government, the condition of the working-class people is deteriorating day by day. The situation of those involved in the plantation industry in Tripura is particularly dire.”
Kar further alleged, “During the Left Front government, several developmental decisions were made in the interest of the working-class people. However, the current administration is delaying the rightful wages of the workers, which is why CITU is raising its voice in protest.”
The organization has put forth a 13-point demand, including stopping the illegal occupation of tea and rubber plantation lands, increasing workers’ wages, providing housing, and establishing industries using locally produced rubber.
