Agartala, 7th March 2025: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the workers’ organization affiliated with the CPIM party has launched a statewide initiative to boost its strength. As part of this effort, the Dharmanagar CITU divisional committee has set ambitious goals to double its membership and intensify its organizational activities.
During a sub-divisional committee meeting chaired by Dipti Dey, CITU leaders outlined an elaborate plan to address political, organizational and movement-related challenges. “We are committed to strengthening our base and addressing the anti-worker policies of the BJP-led coalition government,” said Niranjan Debnath, Secretary of the Dharmanagar CITU Sub-Divisional Committee.
He emphasized the need for collective action to counter issues such as recruitment corruption in central universities, irregularities in medical examinations at Tripura Medical College and the embezzlement of government funds by fake police officers in the Sepahijala SP office.
The meeting also highlighted concerns over the rising prevalence of drug abuse and corruption under the BJP leadership. “The trend of living a vulgar life and the rampant corruption within the BJP is accelerating at an alarming rate,” Debnath remarked. To combat these issues, the committee called for a united front of leftist, democratic, secular, and progressive forces to join an open movement. “Our slogan is clear: ‘Durnitir Bikash, BJP ke Saath’ (Corruption is growing with BJP). We must act now to save the state and protect the next generation from the dangers of drug abuse,” he added.
The key decisions taken during the meeting include doubling the number of civil servants in 2025 compared to 2024, conducting door-to-door campaigns by leadership to recruit civil servants, and establishing organizational committees in each zone by March. Additional measures involve forming garden-based committees to mobilize garden workers, educating workers about trade union organizations and movements through an education camp scheduled for March 23, and organizing a mass deputation and protest program on March 27 to present a 10-point charter of demands to the North Tripura District Labour Officer.
The March 27 deputation will focus on workers’ livelihood issues and local emergencies. “This is not just about strengthening our organization; it is about standing up for the rights and dignity of workers,” said a senior CITU leader.
