Clash over cattle seizure at Kailashahar: Two BSF jawans, local resident injured

Date:

Agartala, 27th August 2026 :  Tension erupted in Kailashahar’s Bhagwannagar area on Wednesday night following a dispute over the seizure of cattle, leaving two BSF jawans and a local resident injured. The incident also triggered a brief blockade of National Highway 208A by local residents.

Local sources informed that the trouble began when BSF personnel intercepted some residents returning home with cattle on suspicion that the animals were being transported for smuggling. The confrontation soon escalated into a clash. A local resident, Ahmed Ali, sustained head and ear injuries and received six stitches at Unakoti District Hospital.

BSF sources, however, claimed that a section of the crowd confronted the personnel and pelted them with bricks and stones. Two BSF personnel reportedly suffered head injuries and were taken to Dharmanagar District Hospital. A BSF vehicle and another vehicle were also damaged during the incident. BSF sources further alleged that an attempt was made to snatch firearms from personnel, though locals disputed these allegations.

Following the clash, residents blocked the Kailashahar-Dharmanagar highway. Police and TSR personnel rushed to the spot, with Kailashahar Police Station OC Tapas Malakar holding discussions with the protesters. The blockade was lifted around 11 PM after police assured them of an investigation.

The situation remained tense through the night but was brought under control with a security presence in the area. Locals have demanded verification of the ownership of the seized cattle and action against anyone found responsible for assault or misconduct.

Police are expected to investigate the conflicting claims and determine the circumstances that led to the clash.
