CM highlights role of lifestyle changes, yoga in mental health

Agartala, 13th December 2024:  Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha today said that mental illness is a challenging issue, and to prevent mental illness, lifestyle changes, abstinence from addiction, and regular yoga practice are necessary.

“Keeping mentally ill patients well and bringing them back to normal life in a healthy manner is a very difficult task. Therefore, the role of psychiatrists is important. To prevent mental illness, lifestyle changes, abstinence from addiction, and regular yoga practice are necessary,” he said.

Today, the Chief Minister said this while formally inaugurating the 25th annual conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society at Vivekananda Auditorium, TMC, and Dr. BRAM Medical College, Hapania, Agartala.

“When mentally ill patients recover, society also has a responsibility to accept them. Depression, anxiety, and addiction are the causes of mental illness. There is a Mental Health Institute in Narsinghgarh for the treatment of mentally ill patients. The state government is looking at how to modernize and improve it. In addition, a rehabilitation center will be set up in Bishramganj, Sepahijala district, with the help of the DoNER Ministry for the rehabilitation of drug addicts,” he said.

Highlighting the improvement of health services in the state, the Chief Minister said that kidney transplants are now being successfully done almost free of cost in the state.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that renowned organizations from outside the state are coming forward to invest in the health sector in the state.

At the inaugural ceremony of the conference, senior psychiatrists Dr. AK Nath, Dr. Jiban Chakraborty, Dr. Bimal Krishna Bhowmik, Dr. Jyotirmoy Ghosh, Dr. Sajal Gupta, and the wife of the late Dr. Rupmoy Wadeddar were felicitated.

Among others, the event was addressed by Dr. Sanjeev Debbarma, Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare, and Dr. Shri Kumar Mukherjee, President, Eastern Region of the Indian Psychiatric Society.

Also present at the event were Dr. Anjan Das, Director, Department of Health and Preventive Medicines, Professor Dr. H. P. Sharma, Director, Department of Health and Medicine, Dr. Arindam Dutta, Principal, Tripura Medical College, and others.
