Agartala, 29th August 2025:  Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha announced today that the state government is considering using water from the Titas River to supply drinking water to all 51 wards of the Agartala Municipal Corporation. He made this announcement after inaugurating the Vivekananda Township Project at Kaman Chowmuhani, Agartala.

Highlighting the challenges faced during the construction of 48 flats, Dr. Saha said, “Our government is transparent and committed to the welfare of the people. These flats cater to lower, middle, and higher-income groups. We were waiting to hand over the keys, and now the process is complete. I thank TUDA for constructing these earthquake-resistant flats in the heart of Agartala.”

Dr. Saha further stated, “Development is our priority. From January to August, we have inaugurated and laid the foundation for projects worth Rs 800 crore. TUDA has been set up to construct modern and comfortable housing, and permissions for high-rise buildings are being given following all rules.”

A new project of 216 flats, costing around Rs 96 crore near the Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel, is underway and expected to be completed by March next year. Regarding urban planning, the Chief Minister said that GIS-based master plans for 20 urban areas are in progress, with Agartala’s master plan already 70% complete. Under the first phase of the Mukhyamantri Nagar Unnayan Prakalpa, development projects worth approximately Rs 530 crore are being implemented with support from the ADB.

On the drinking water proposal, Dr. Saha explained, “Water from canals like Haora, Kalapania, or Katakhal mixes with the Titas River. I have proposed that water from the Titas River be supplied to all 51 wards of Agartala Municipal Corporation. If approved, we will work with the Centre to ensure provision of iron-free drinking water.”
