Congress Calls DGP Death Probe “Eyewash”, Demands High Court Judge-Led Inquiry

Date:

Agartala, 26th July 2026:  Tripura Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Sunday criticised the state government’s decision to form a police team headed by an SP-level officer to investigate the unnatural death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, calling it an “eyewash”.

Addressing a press conference at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan, Roy Barman said the Congress and the people of Tripura had demanded an inquiry by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court to ensure a fair and transparent investigation. However, instead of a judicial probe, the government has handed over the investigation to a police team, which raises several questions, he said.

“The investigation team formed by the government will not be able to conduct a proper inquiry. There will be pressure on the team, and there is a possibility that important facts may be suppressed,” the Congress MLA alleged.

Questioning the circumstances surrounding the DGP’s death, Roy Barman said a cloud of doubt remains among the public over whether it was a case of suicide or a planned murder. He claimed that the circumstances needed to be thoroughly examined and questioned whether an SP-level investigation would be able to uncover all aspects of the case.

“The state police chief himself was not safe. The people want to know the truth behind his unnatural death,” he said.

Roy Barman also raised questions over various possibilities, including whether any pressure related to action against drug mafias or other issues could have played a role. He alleged that possibilities such as a planned killing or other foul play must be investigated independently.

“Why is the government hesitating to order an inquiry by a High Court judge? Only a judicial probe can reveal the truth behind the DGP’s death,” he said, appealing to Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha to reconsider the decision and order a High Court-monitored investigation.

The Congress leader also claimed that the DGP had faced humiliation in front of the public recently, and said all related issues should be examined during the investigation.

Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashish Kumar Saha and other party leaders were also present at the press conference.
