Tragic Death at Dumbur Waterfall Raises Questions Over Tourist Safety Measures

Date:

Agartala, 26th July 2026:  A tragic incident at Dumbur Waterfall in Tirthamukh, located under New Gomati ADC Village of Karbook block in Gomati district, has cast a shadow of grief across the area. A tourist lost his life after drowning at the accident-prone waterfall, once again raising concerns over the lack of adequate safety arrangements at the popular tourist destination.

Local residents alleged that Dumbur Waterfall has become a dangerous spot, where several people have lost their lives in the past due to drowning incidents. Despite repeated accidents, the administration has allegedly failed to introduce permanent safety measures such as warning boards, protective barricades, lifeguards, or dedicated rescue teams.

The deceased has been identified as Donal Chakma, a resident of Rangachhara area under New Gomati ADC Village. His family members expressed anger and claimed that such a tragedy could have been prevented if proper safety arrangements had been made earlier. They urged the authorities to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of visitors at the tourist spot.

After receiving information about the incident, a rescue team from Jatanbari Fire Service and personnel from New Bazar Police Station rushed to the spot. After a prolonged search operation, the body of Donal Chakma was recovered from the waterfall.

The body was later taken to New Bazar Rural Hospital for post-mortem examination and has been kept at the hospital morgue. Police have started the necessary legal procedures regarding the incident.
