Congress MLA Birajit Sinha demands High Court-monitored investigation into DGP Anurag Dhankar’s death

Date:

Agartala, 23rd July 2026:  Senior Congress MLA from Kailashahar, Birajit Sinha, has raised questions over the circumstances surrounding the unnatural death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankhar and demanded an impartial investigation into the matter.

Addressing reporters on Thursday, Sinha said that the death of a senior police officer of Dhankhar’s stature has created uncertainty among the people as the exact circumstances behind the incident have not been made public. He urged the state government to come forward with a clear statement and remove doubts surrounding the case.

Sinha demanded that the investigation should be conducted under the supervision of a High Court judge to ensure transparency. He said that not only opposition parties but people across the country want to know the truth behind the death of the senior IPS officer.

“Anurag Dhankhar was an outstanding police officer who served with distinction in various important assignments across the country. His body was found inside his office chamber, but the circumstances leading to his death have not been clearly explained by the government,” Sinha said.

Questioning the lack of publicly available details, he said that if the incident was a suicide, the government should clarify how it happened and provide all relevant information after proper investigation. He added that photographs and evidence related to the incident should have been preserved immediately to avoid any doubts.

Sinha said Dhankhar had handled several high-profile investigations during his career, including major financial crime cases, and his death has raised concerns beyond Tripura. “People from different parts of the country, including public representatives, are asking what exactly happened. We also do not have the answers,” he added.

The Congress MLA appealed to Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha to take immediate steps for a fair probe and ensure that the truth behind the DGP’s death comes out before the public.
