Congress protest at Melaghar demands RTI activist’s release

Date:

Agartala, 23rd June 2026:   The District Congress staged a protest march and submitted a deputation in Melaghar on Tuesday demanding the release of RTI activist Prasenjit Saha. Party leaders accused the BJP government of political vendetta, false charges, and curbing freedom of speech.

Congress alleged that Saha, a resident of Thakurpara, was deliberately implicated in a narcotics case due to his consistent exposure of irregularities and corruption in government projects and municipal works through RTI petitions. He is currently in jail under trial.

The protest rally began at Melaghar Motor Stand and moved through key roads before concluding in front of Melaghar police station, where demonstrators raised slogans for his immediate release. Later, a delegation led by Congress leaders Neel Kamal Saha, Laxman Das, Habil Miah, and Dipak Chakraborty submitted a memorandum to Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shashimohan Debbarma, seeking impartial investigation and Saha’s release.

Social organizations and political circles have also voiced support for Saha. However, the administration has yet to issue any official response, stating only that the matter remains under investigation.
