Agartala, February 16:  Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of breaking most of the guarantees he made to the people of India since 2014. He said that the Modi-led BJP government has failed to create enough jobs, reduce unemployment, and support the workers and the industries.

PCC spokesperson Chakraborty held a press conference at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan on Friday, where he strongly condemned and protested against the Modi government’s performance on the employment front. He said that the BJP came to power in 2014 with a promise to create employment for two crore unemployed people every year. However, in the last 10 years, the government has not been able to provide employment to even 20 crore people, as it had claimed.

He cited the data from the Parliament, which showed that in the last eight years, 21.93 crore unemployed youths applied for jobs, but only 8 lakh of them got employed. He contrasted this with the record of the previous UPA government, under which the unemployment rate was only four percent. He said that the unemployment rate has risen to 10.5 percent in the last 10 years, and it is even higher in the rural areas, where it stands at 10.92 percent.

He also pointed out that there are 30 lakh government vacancies that have not been filled by the Modi government, despite the demand for public sector jobs. He said that the wages of the workers have also suffered under the BJP rule, as they have decreased from 22 percent to 15-25 percent, depending on the sector. He blamed the government for waiving off bank loans of Rs 14.5 lakh crore to the corporates, while shutting down 40 thousand 175 job producing organizations.

He further criticized Modi for mocking the people with his ‘guarantee picture’, which he said was nothing but a hollow slogan. He said that Modi’s own state of Tripura, where he leads the travel engine government, has the highest unemployment rate in the country, at 14.3 percent. He said that the state assembly data revealed that only 15 thousand 168 people have been employed in the last six years, while the government has been misleading the youth with false promises of jobs.

He said that the Pradesh Congress was the only party that was raising its voice against the Modi government’s failures and fighting for the rights of the workers and the unemployed. He urged the people to join the Congress in its struggle for a better and more prosperous India.
