Agartala, 2nd May 2026: The Pradesh Congress staged a dramatic protest march in Agartala this evening against the unprecedented rise in gas prices and the resulting financial strain on households and businesses.
The rally began at the Congress headquarters near Post Office Chowmuhani and wound through several parts of the city. In a symbolic gesture, party workers carried gas cylinders on their shoulders “as if being taken to a crematorium,” underscoring the severity of the crisis. At the front of the procession, banners condemned the “unprecedented price hike” and accused both the central and state governments of pushing citizens into economic distress.
Pradesh Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty led the demonstration, highlighting that frequent increases in cylinder prices have left ordinary people gasping for relief. The protest drew attention to the sharp jump in commercial gas rates, which recently surged by Rs 994, taking the price to Rs 3,581.50 from the earlier Rs 2,587.50.
Local traders, already struggling, expressed dismay at the sudden escalation, with many turning to gas agencies in desperation. While some attribute the hike to global conflicts, others allege that the government has taken advantage of the post-election period in several states to impose the burden.
The Congress vowed to continue mobilizing resistance against what it described as “anti-people policies” that are deepening the economic crisis across Tripura.
